Conference history
OREBA 1.0: the 2014 olivine battery conference
A sourced history of OREBA 1.0 in Montreal: Hydro-Quebec's 2014 conference, its olivine research programme, speakers, venue and connection to this domain.
Scientific sessions: 26–28 May 2014 · Montreal, Canada
OREBA 1.0 was the First International Conference on Olivines for Rechargeable Batteries. Hydro-Québec’s announcement of 22 May 2014 identifies Montreal, scientific sessions on 26–28 May and an event held in honour of Michel Armand. It links readers to oreba.org, documenting this domain’s historical conference role. [1]
This page is an independent historical reference. The contemporary OREBA.org publication does not represent the 2014 organizing committee or operate its registration service. For later conference activity, use the official OREBA III website.
Dates and venue
The archived venue page identifies Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth in Montreal. The preserved programme begins with registration and a welcome reception on Sunday, 25 May, followed by scientific sessions from Monday, 26 May through Wednesday, 28 May. [3] [5]
These records explain the distinction between a four-day gathering window and the three scientific-session dates in Hydro-Québec’s announcement. The dates above refer to the scientific sessions. Hotel and registration details are historical information, not a current booking offer.
Host and organization
Hydro-Québec described itself as the host. The archived committees page names Karim Zaghib of its research institute, IREQ, as chairman, with separate international scientific and local organizing committees. Hydro-Québec’s 2014 annual report also records the conference. [1] [4] [8]
The former committee’s membership is not the editorial team of this publication. The archived welcome page is preserved as evidence of the conference’s identity and scope. Its old contact and registration information is not presented here as an active service. [2]
Speakers and recognition
The programme opens with a tribute to Michel Armand by John B. Goodenough and a presentation by Armand. Other listed speakers include Margret Wohlfahrt-Mehrens, Linda Nazar, Atsuo Yamada, Christian Julien and Montserrat Galceran Mestres. The source establishes their programmed participation and the subjects of their presentations. [5]
Goodenough’s tribute and Armand’s recognition are specific parts of this event’s record. They do not establish an affiliation between those researchers and the current publication.
Scientific program
The preserved programme spans olivine and related phosphate chemistry, ion mobility, synthesis, carbon composites, electrode reactions and storage applications. Selected connections to this publication’s research sections are:
| Programme subject | Research connection |
|---|---|
| Carbon nanocoatings and LFP/carbon interactions | Conductive coatings and networks |
| Sodium extraction and insertion in NaFePO₄/FePO₄ | Sodium olivine phase identity |
| Ion mobility and reaction distribution | Lithium transport in LFP |
| Olivine batteries for storage | Material and system boundaries |
These are paraphrased subject connections, not a reconstruction of the complete proceedings. A presentation title shows what was scheduled; it does not verify every scientific or commercial claim made during the meeting. [5]
Galceran and colleagues’ original presentation is available separately. It identifies the conference and 26 May 2014 date and discusses sodium insertion, extraction and intermediate phases through diffraction. The sodium-phosphate article distinguishes this presentation from a peer-reviewed research paper. [7]
Poster sessions
The archived poster programme lists sessions on 26 and 27 May. Its topics include carbon treatment, synthesis, local conductivity, manganese-substituted phosphates, sodium-containing iron phosphate and polymer-electrolyte cells. This record adds technical context beyond the invited talks. [6]
Poster titles are not treated as independently verified performance measurements. In particular, a lifetime or safety claim embedded in a title needs the underlying test protocol and results before it can support a general battery claim.
Preserved records

Some historical registration and download services no longer function. This reference preserves the documented scientific context without recreating those services or reproducing historical photographs and branding.
